Bio

Professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Canada and author of The One-Minute Workout. His research made high-intensity interval training (HIIT) one of the most-studied ideas in exercise science.

Protocol

His studies show that short, hard bursts of exercise — down to a few minutes of intense work in a 10-minute session — can deliver much of the cardiovascular, metabolic, and mitochondrial benefit of far longer moderate training. He popularized time-efficient protocols like the '1-minute workout' (three 20-second all-out sprints) and studies how intensity substitutes for duration.

Principles

Intensity buys time — for people who won't do hours of cardio, brief high-intensity intervals are a legitimate, evidence-based route to fitness and metabolic health.
