Bio

Physician-scientist, director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and scientific director of the American Federation for Aging Research. He leads the Longevity Genes Project studying centenarians and drives the TAME (Targeting Aging with Metformin) trial.

Protocol

His centenarian cohorts — hundreds of people living past 95 — revealed protective genetic variants (in CETP, APOC3, and the growth-hormone / IGF-1 axis, where lower IGF-1 predicts exceptional survival). His TAME trial is designed to test whether metformin can delay the onset of multiple age-related diseases at once, establishing aging itself as a treatable target for regulators.

Principles

Target aging, not one disease at a time — the biology that lets centenarians avoid heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia can be pursued pharmacologically, and proving it with an approvable trial (TAME) is the field's key regulatory milestone.
