Using parabiosis — joining the circulatory systems of young and old mice — his lab showed young blood restores neurogenesis, reduces neuroinflammation, and improves memory in old animals, while old blood ages young ones. His group now uses the blood proteome to build 'organ aging clocks' that estimate how fast individual organs age.
The bloodstream carries the signals of aging — identify the pro-youthful and pro-aging factors circulating in blood, and measure organ-by-organ aging, to intervene on the brain and body before disease appears.
