Bio

Molecular biologist and biogerontologist, emerita professor at UCSF and now vice president of aging research at Calico Labs (Alphabet's longevity company). Her discovery that a single gene mutation could double the lifespan of the worm C. elegans is one of the founding results of modern aging science.

Protocol

Her research established that aging is under genetic and hormonal control: mutating the daf-2 gene — part of an insulin/IGF-1-like signaling pathway — doubles lifespan in the worm and keeps the animals youthful, an effect reversed by the downstream gene daf-16. Her lab went on to show that different tissues, and even individual neurons and germ cells, signal to set the whole animal's rate of aging.

Principles

Aging is not fixed but malleable — a regulated process with master control genes, conserved from worms to mammals, that can in principle be slowed. The insulin/IGF-1 pathway she mapped remains a central target of the field.
