Most RCTs are small to moderate in size. Bioavailability varies widely by form (citrate and glycinate absorb better than oxide). Many studies don't control for baseline magnesium status, so benefits may be largest in deficient populations. Evidence for anxiety, cognitive function, and athletic performance remains limited. Excess supplementation can cause gastrointestinal side effects and may interact with certain medications.
