Mechanism
Magnesium L-threonate is a chelated form of magnesium bound to L-threonic acid, a metabolite of vitamin C. The L-threonate moiety is proposed to enhance blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration and brain magnesium bioavailability compared to other magnesium salts, potentially supporting synaptic plasticity, NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor function, and cognitive performance.

No human trials exist. The claim that L-threonate enhances brain magnesium uptake relative to other forms has not been validated in humans via neuroimaging or CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) sampling. Most human magnesium research uses other salts (citrate, glycinate, oxide) and cannot be directly extrapolated to this form. Bioavailability and cognitive efficacy in humans remain unknown. Marketing often overstates the translational gap between rodent cognition studies and human outcomes.
