Retinaldehyde is a retinoid precursor that converts to retinoic acid (the active form) via enzymatic oxidation in skin. Retinaldehyde is weaker than prescription retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene) and requires enzymatic conversion, so onset is slower and efficacy plateaus below that of stronger retinoids. Most trials are 8–12 weeks; longer-term safety and efficacy data are limited. Irritation and photosensitivity remain possible, especially in sensitive skin. Studies are often small (N < 100) and sometimes industry-sponsored. No evidence that 0.1% is superior to lower concentrations (0.025–0.05%) for most outcomes.
