Efficacy depends critically on application thickness (most users apply 25–50% of the recommended 2 mg/cm²), so real-world protection is often lower than labeled SPF. Mineral sunscreens can leave a white cast and may feel occlusive; some users abandon consistent use for this reason. SPF 50 offers only marginally better UVA protection than SPF 30 (the difference in UVA block is ~1–2%). No sunscreen replaces behavioral measures (shade, clothing, timing).
