Evidence
4/5

Multiple RCTs show red light therapy improves muscle recovery, wound healing, and some pain conditions, but effect sizes are often modest and heterogeneous across studies. Mechanism is established in vitro, but human trials remain limited in scope and sample size, with publication bias toward positive results.

Mechanism

Red light (600–700 nm wavelength) penetrates skin and is absorbed by mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, stimulating ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production and reducing oxidative stress. This is proposed to enhance cellular energy, reduce inflammation, and improve tissue repair and recovery.

Best evidence type

Randomized trial

Caveats

Most RCTs are small (N < 50) and many lack adequate blinding or sham controls. Wavelength, intensity, duration, and distance vary widely across studies, making generalization difficult. Evidence for cognitive or systemic anti-aging claims is sparse. Some trials show no benefit for athletic performance or muscle soreness. Long-term safety and optimal dosing remain understudied.
