Observational studies and small RCTs show glutathione injections can raise serum GSH levels and improve markers of oxidative stress in specific populations (Parkinson's disease, liver disease, critical illness). However, human RCT evidence for clinical benefit is sparse and inconsistent; most outcome data come from small trials or case series. Bioavailability and tissue penetration of injected GSH remain incompletely characterized.
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide antioxidant that neutralizes reactive oxygen species and supports cellular detoxification via the glutathione S-transferase enzyme system. Injected glutathione bypasses first-pass hepatic metabolism, aiming to raise systemic GSH levels and reduce oxidative stress.

Observational
“The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy of intravenous glutathione in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.”
“OBJECTIVE: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication differences and restricted interests.”
“Ischaemia/reperfusion induces systemic inflammation and oxidative stress and thereby remote organ injury in the kidney.”
“PURPOSE: Glutathione (GSH), the most abundant endogenous antioxidant, is a critical regulator of oxidative stress and immune function.”
Glutathione is rapidly metabolized and may not meaningfully increase intracellular GSH in most tissues—the clinical relevance of elevated serum levels is unclear. Few large, well-controlled RCTs exist for common anti-aging or wellness claims. Parkinson's disease studies (the strongest indication) show mixed results and small sample sizes. Off-label use for skin lightening, anti-aging, or general 'detoxification' lacks rigorous human trial support. Cost and frequency of injections are high relative to evidence of benefit.
